For whatever reason, cream soda is pink in Canada. Which really makes no sense if you think about it, as it’s vanilla flavoured, and vanilla isn’t pink. On top of that, this isn’t actually even true for all of Canada, as like places like the USA and the UK, in Quebec and Newfoundland it’s clear;

Cream soda is generally a caramel color whenever I see it in the US, which also doesn’t make much sense I suppose.

I’ve had pink cream soda here in the states, but seeing as it was in Michigan, maybe some just made its way across the border.

I’ve always known it to be clear or an ever so cloudy white.
It makes no sense for it to be pink at all.

While we’re on this subject, can someone explain blue raspberry?
I grew up with light tan cream soda, looking like champagne.

Cream soda for normal consumption should be pink. White cream soda is like a special edition cream soda, for special occasions.

Blue raspberry makes no sense on the surface, but it actually makes sense because it differs raspberry from cherry and strawberry. Otherwise we’d be living in confusing red fruit flavour anarchy.

Duh! Why do you think we went to war with them over trade? It’s over national security risks like pink cream soda! We have to keep America safe!

Fun fact: Vanilla is mostly green.

That’s why I import mine from Hong Kong. I can’t even think of drinking all that red colouring.

Oh, I know - I was just adding to the confusion. Too many reds, so let’s make strawberry green since there aren’t enough green sodas, with the exception of green apple, my personal favorite.
Jones uses blue for bubblegum, but perhaps that one should be pink...

We have both the pink and clear here in the US. there’s also a 3rd option where it looks like watered down root beer.

Vanilla extract is usually dark brown, so in that light it sort of makes sense...

I’ve never seen anything but brown, since cream soda is like an offshoot of root beer. And vanilla is the main flavor, and that’s brown (liquid extract).
I don’t think my brain would respond to another color very well.

Barq’s cream soda in Alberta is clear. It’s also kind of “meh”.

The color is weird, but the flavor is vaguely based on the flavor of a wild black raspberries. The actual berries are delicious, but I’ve only rarely encountered them in the wild in fresh clear cuts.

It used to be that you could get either in the Maritimes, which makes even less sense since nothing but the flavor was different, but I think it’s all clear there now. Haven’t bought cream soda in a while...

This is just what they look like when growing. These are immature pods. They need to stay on the vine for many months before being removed just as they dry a certain amount, followed by killing them to stop growth and a oxidation/fermentation step not unlike the method used to produce black tea. They ultimately end up brown-black in color before being graded and sold.
This process is why the real stuff is expensive and most “vanilla” flavored things use usually use “natural flavors” as a heavily processed byproduct of wood pulp production (or more disturbing sources) or “artificial flavors” that are simply artificially produced vanillin. Real vanilla from vanilla beans is far more complex in flavor.
The really fun fact I like to point out is that they’re orchids.

The red means it’s for off-road use only (like diesel).

I’ve actually never seen Barq’s in bottles. I had no idea it was clear here.

Im not sure about bottles, but they do have it in cans. The cans are kind of a cream color.
